Lady Gaga on Saturday night delivered a historic free concert in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on Copacabana Beach, with an estimated 2.5 million in attendance making it the highest-attended concert by a female artist in history, according to promoter Live Nation.

After the event, the artist posted on Instagram, “Nothing could prepare me for the feeling I had during last night’s show—the absolute pride and joy I felt singing for the people of Brazil. The sight of the crowd during my opening songs took my breath away. Your heart shines so bright, your culture is so vibrant and special, I hope you know how grateful I am to have shared this historical moment with you. An estimated 2.5 million people came to see me sing, the biggest crowd for any woman in history.”

Gaga’s historic night apparently tops that of Madonna, who also on May 4 (of 2024) did a free concert at Copacabana beach to cap off the final night of her “Celebration Tour” in front of 1.6 million fans, and The Rolling Stones whose 2006 stop there also drew more than 1.5 million. Also like the Madonna show, the sprawling Gaga gig was headed up by Arthur Fogel, Live Nation’s president of global touring and concerts chairman.

While the night was mostly one of triumph, with Gaga delivering a dazzling spectacle with hits like “Poker Face,” “Alejandro” and “Bloody Mary” along with tunes from new album Mayhem, Police on Sunday said two people were arrested in connection with alleged plot to detonate a bomb at the concert. Authorities said the plot was hatched by a group that promoted hate speech against the LGBTQ+ community who planned to detonate homemade explosive devices at the event.

Saturday night’s performance followed Lady Gaga’s recent headlining appearances at Coachella and sold-out stadium shows in Mexico City. She heads to Singapore next before kicking off “The MAYHEM Ball” world this summer and fall.

Gaga’s Instagram post continues, “Thank you little monsters all over the world. I love you. I will never forget this moment. Paws up little monsters. Obrigada. Love, Mother Monster.”
