Spain’s Marenostrum Fuengirola Awarded ‘Event Carbon Footprint Certificate’

Marenostrum Fuengirola, home to the prominent concert series on Spain’s Costa del Sol in Andalusia, turns ten this year.

The even will commemorate this anniversary with its largest edition to date, and by becoming the first venue in Spain to receive the so-called ‘Event Carbon Footprint Certificate’ by Spanish certification association AENOR, which focuses on environmental protection.

Marenostrum Fuengirola became the first concert series in Spain to mitigate and offset its COā‚‚ emissions in its 2024 edition. The AENOR certification follows the GHG Protocol methodology, the international standard for determining greenhouse gas emissions.

Since 2023, Marenostrum Fuengirola has been collaborating with the Repsol Foundation’s Green Motor project, which helps various organizations reduce their emissions through reforestation.

And, since 2019, the concert series has been free of single-use plastics.

This year, wristbands will be made from recycled ocean plastic. Repsol is on board again, and this year, the company will provide approximately 20,000 liters of 100% renewable fuel for the generators on the main stage and the shuttle buses on various weekends, which will contribute to the reduction of more than 55 tons of CO2, by the event’s own admission.

In addition, used oil from the venue’s food trucks will be collected for use in the production of more 100% renewable fuel, contributing to the circular economy.

Repsol will also install solar panels to power the main box office and will set up two solar-powered mobile phone charging areas, as well as two electric charging points for the festival’s vehicle fleet, according to a press release from Marenostrum Fuengirola.

Car brand Volvo will provide its plug-in hybrid and electric vehicles for internal transport, and more.

Other strategic partners on board in 2025, in addition to Spain’s major bank Unicaja, the festival’s main sponsor since day one, include water bottling company Lya with its cartoned water; Andalusian brewery Cruzcampo; Coca-Cola; Johnnie Walker; the rail transport company Ouigo; and ticket sales platform Viva Ticket.

In its first nine editions, Marenostrum Fuengirola has welcomed more than 880,000 people from over 60 countries. The number of attendees will break the one-million mark this season. More than 500 artists, 300 national and 200 international, have performed on stage over the years, including Jennifer López, Alejandro Sanz, Manuel Carrasco, Ricky Martin, Juan Luis Guerra, Bob Dylan, Robbie Williams, Rod Stewart, Santana, Ozuna, Scorpions, Nicky Jam, Maluma, Bizarrap, Aventura, ManÔ, Macklemore, and many more.

This year, SebastiƔn Yatra, Leiva, Prodigy, Ozuna, ManƔ, Chayanne, Lionel Richie, Bonnie Tyler, Thirty Seconds to Mars, and many more are scheduled to perform.

Marenostrum Fuengirola has a maximum capacity of 18,500, and is operated by a group of Spanish promoters.

In 2024, the economic return benefitting the city of Fuengirola exceeded €50 million, by its own admission.
