Powerhouse: International Announces New York Event Series With Moor Mother, Pussy Riot Siberia & More

Powerhouse: International, a new festival launching this fall at Powerhouse Arts in Brooklyn, New York, announced a series of concerts including shows by Moor Mother and Pussy Riot Siberia (fronted by Nadya Tolokonnikova) on Dec. 2, and by claire rousay on Nov. 21. The series is curated by producer Adam Shore, and part of the larger festival conceived and curated by David Binder, Tony Award-winning producer and artistic director.
“So often, artists’ shows have to fit into a venue, but here, the venue can be made to fit the show,” Shore said in a statement. “This music series is breaking the idea of what a venue can be. Artists who are not normally invited to these rarified spaces but should be, Artists who are not normally invited to these rarified spaces but should be, are given the opportunity to reimagine how they want to present their work.
“When you can bring New Yorkers into spaces they’ve never been to before, it opens a concert up into a collective experience a way that’s so different than, ‘here’s your assigned seat, sit down, be passive, accept the performance we’ve provided for you, and leave,'” Shore continues. “I can’t wait to see people walk into this room for the first time, because everyone’s going to immediately see how special what they’re about to encounter is. We get the rare opportunity to bring people into a space for the first time every single night. It’s so exciting.”
The concert performances kick off on Nov. 21 with claire rousay seated in the round, with doors at 8 p.m. and the show starting at 9 p.m. Moor Mother and Pussy Riot Siberia will appear on a double-bill standing in the round on Dec. 2, the show kicking off at 8:30 p.m. EYE (AV show) and aya (AV show) will stand on Dec. 5, while Red Hot Presents TRANSA – A Live Experience stands on Dec. 6. “The Imagining” by Amari Marshall will then take place on Dec. 13.
“What Adam is doing with the music series is precisely what I envisioned for the festival as a whole: pushing boundaries, breaking norms, and inviting everyone to the party,” David Binder said in a statement.
Eric Shiner, President of Powerhouse Arts, said in a statement, “Powerhouse Arts envisions creative expression as central to personal and civic development. This festival brilliantly extends that vision by turning our building into a home where artists generate new possibilities and extend Brooklyn’s legacy as a crucible for cultural transformation.”
