Red Hot Announces ‘TRAИƧA’ Live Event At Los Angeles’ Getty Center

Activist and music production non-profit Red Hot is bringing its acclaimed concept album TRAИƧA to Los Angeles’ Getty Center next month. The Sept. 6 event will feature an ensemble of artists including Ahya Simone, Cole Pulice, Teddy Geiger, Nina Keith, Devendra Banhart and more performing music from TRAИƧA, as well as screenings of archival films from across the nonprofit’s history.
David Longstreth of Dirty Projectors has signed on as the event’s music director. The ensemble cast of artists also includes CLARITY, Green-House, Fashion Club, AV María, Heart Shaped, Portraits of Tracy, Noah Klein, Jodie Landau, along with additional special guests.
TRAИƧA, which was released last year, is described as “one of the most ambitious projects ever undertaken by Red Hot – a spiritual journey across eight chapters and 46 songs, spotlighting the gifts of many of the most daring, imaginative trans and non-binary artists working today.” The collection boasts more than 100 artists, with originals and covers including the first Sade song in 6-years, a 26-minute André 3000 piece and contributions from ANOHNI, Sam Smith, Laura Jane Grace, Hunter Schafer, Teddy Geiger, Beverly Glenn-Copeland, Yaeji, Julien Baker, Clairo and more.
Along with a two-hour musical performance, the Getty Center event will feature André 3000’s TRAИƧA contribution playing on the garden terrace against a backdrop of original visuals, as well an installation titled “Periphone” with the sounds of Nina Keith’s water avatar. Historic Red Hot materials will be on display including artwork and videos highlighting moments from the Red Hot + Blue, Red Hot + Dance and No Alternative campaigns.
“It’s a privilege to feature this extraordinary project and celebrate the trans community alongside the Red Hot Organization’s inspiring legacy at the Getty, especially as our exhibitions right now are centered on expansive expressions of queer love,” Sarah Cooper, Getty performance programs specialist, said in a statement. “Ever Present is a place to honor the voices and histories that are always with us in this diverse world, even if they are not always visible in the dominant narratives of our institutions.”
Red Hot was founded in 1989 by John Carlin and Leigh Blake in response to the AIDS epidemic. Today’s announcement notes that the organization “has grown to champion an important range of social issues including human rights, equal access to healthcare, and more, with a focus on communities of color.”
Album projects in the early ’90s – Red Hot + Blue, Red Hot + Dance and No Alternative – featured hundreds of artists including David Byrne, U2, George Michael, Nirvana, Patti Smith, Annie Lennox and Madonna, helping raise millions of dollars to help fight against AIDS and support LGBTQ+ rights.
