Legendary music venue Maxwell’s, located in Hoboken, New Jersey, is the subject of an upcoming documentary directed by Paul Rachman. “No Backstage at Maxwell’s” dives deep into the history of the beloved venue—which hosted iconic rock bands like Nirvana, REM, Hüsker Dü and The Replacements—and the producers of the film are seeking photos and video footage from fans, patrons and bands throughout its run.

Any archival images and footage submitted would contribute to telling the story of an indie venue that helped shape the rock scene for over three decades before closing in 2013.

“Your memories could help preserve the legacy of this legendary space for generations to come. We’re asking for help from those who lived it,” said Claudia Sullivan, a long-time fan and patron of Maxwell’s.

Rachman aims to bring the spirit of Maxwell’s to life using archival footage, photography and interviews with the owners, musicians, bartenders and fans who helped make the venue a cultural touchstone. He previously directed “American Hardcore: The History of American Punk Rock 1980-86,” a documentary that chronicles the evolution of the hardcore punk rock scene.

“Maxwell’s wasn’t just a club—it was a community. It was a proving ground,” Rachman said. “It was where music scenes collided, friendships were forged, and bands found both their audience and their soul.”

Those behind the film said that any and all submissions are welcome, and “nothing is considered too raw or unprofessional.” To contribute material, contact the producers at info@maxwellsmovie.com.
