Butthole Surfers made a surprise reunion appearance Sept. 23 at the Hollywood premiere of a new documentary on the history of the cult favorite band.

The Hole Truth and Nothing Butt made its West Coast debut at the Egyptian Theatre as part of American Cinematheque’s Beyond Fest. The band was set to participate in a Q&A session but instead played a few tunes.

The band’s short set of “Cherub,” “The Colored FBI Guy,” and “The Shah Sleeps in Lee Harvey’s Grave” was its first public performance since The Growlers Six festival in San Pedro, California, in 2017. Butthole Surfers’ last headline tour was in 2011. The band has not officially broken up, but performances are nevertheless a rarity.
