The Weeknd Donates $350,000 To Jamaican Families Impacted By Hurricane Melissa

The Weeknd is donating $350,000 from his XO Humanitarian Fund towards those affected by Hurricane Melissa in Jamaica. The hurricane impacted nearly six million people across the Caribbean islands at the end of October, and Jamaica bore the brunt of the Category 5 storm. The World Food Programme (WFP) has been working alongside the Jamaican government to assist those affected and meet their food needs. The Weeknd’s donation will go towards supporting this program.
The Weeknd, real name Abel Tesfaye, serves as the WFP Goodwill Ambassador. Thus far, 9,000 people have been reached with food kits containing rice, lentils, vegetable oil and canned fish and meats. The WFP has provided 254,000 people with emergency food distributions across Jamaica, Cuba and Haiti.
“We are grateful to The Weeknd for his generous support for WFP’s urgent relief efforts,” Barron Segar, World Food Program USA President and CEO said in a statement. “His compassion will provide much needed comfort and resilience to Jamaicans as they navigate this crisis. When it comes to humanitarian disasters, WFP is among the world’s first responders. But our work is only possible through the generosity of our private sector donors and global partners.”
The XO Humanitarian Fund was founded in 2022 to support the World Food Programme’s efforts to combat the hunger crisis worldwide. The Weeknd donated proceeds from his “After Hours Til Dawn” stadium tour to support his foundation, and has contributed and pledged more than $6.5 million to provide food and support to these experiencing hunger across the globe. In Gaza, $4.5 millionw as donated towards WFP’s emergency response, while $2 million went to those in Ethiopia. The program also donated $1 million to support those in the aftermath of the Los Angeles wildfires earlier this year.
The “After Hours Til Dawn” stadium tour kicked off on July 14, 2022, at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, with Kaytranada and Mike Dean as support. The show sold out, with 46,486 fans in attendance, grossing $5.1 million, according to Pollstar’s Boxoffice.
