LA’s Historic Mayan Theatre To Reopen As ‘Revamped, Reimagined’ Venue

Los Angeles’ historic Mayan Theatre will get a new life as a “revamped, reimagined” music venue in 2026.
Built in 1927, the theater has already had multiple revivals and downfalls. As a legitimate theater, it staged musicals and comedies — in contrast to the neighboring Belasco, the home of dramatic productions. It hosted Spanish language performances and films. In the 1970s, it operated as an adult theater. In 1990, it reopened as a music venue, becoming a standard tour stop in downtown LA. In July 2025, long-time promoter Sammy Chao said the venue would shutter at the end of September.
However, last month, CoStar reported a new operator would take over and revive the Mayan Revival wonder in early 2026,.
Details remain scarce though the theater has a newly launched Instagram presence and website.
