The National Independent Venue Association of California (NIVA CA) has appointed Joe Rinaldi to the role of President, effective today. Rinaldi serves as the managing partner of San Diego’s 705-capacity Music Box and the national buyer for the city’s Mission Bayfest festival, which welcomes 45,000 fans annually and most recently featured performances from Sublime, Rebelution, and Slightly Stoopid, among others.

NIVA California is the state chapter of the National Independent Venue Association, which represents independent venues, promoters, and festivals across the state and works to “preserve and nurture the ecosystem of independent live performance through advocacy, education, and community building.”

Rinaldi, who has served as NIVA’s Southern California Advocate since 2021, succeeds the two-year co-presidency of Gabe Docto, Jim Cornett, and Josh Lieberman. Before that, Julia Heath held the role of prescient in 2023 and Casey Lowdermilk was at the helm in 2022.

“Independent venues are the heartbeat of California’s culture and economy,” Rinaldi said in a statement. “After years of advocating for our community in Southern California, I am honored to lead the statewide effort to ensure our industry not only survives but thrives. Our mission is clear: we must unite our 630-plus qualifying venues, promoters, and festivals to become a self-sufficient force for change.”

Rinaldi’s history in the live industry also includes serving as the talent buyer and general manager of the famed Viper Room on the Sunset Strip in West Hollywood, California, as well as the talent buyer for West Hollywood’s House of Blues, Hard Rock Hotel San Diego and 4th & B in San Diego.

Today’s announcement notes that under Rinaldi’s leadership, NIVA CA has outlined a strategic four-pillar agenda for 2026:

Achieving Self-Sufficiency: Strengthening the organizational infrastructure of NIVA CA to operate as a permanent, independent advocate for the state’s live entertainment sector.

Unifying the Industry: Bridging the gap between the 630+ independent venues and promoters across California to create a singular, powerful voice in Sacramento.

Legislative Reform: Prioritizing the passage of comprehensive ticketing legislation in California to protect fans and venues from predatory secondary market practices.

Establishing a State Music Office: Leading the charge to create a dedicated California Music Office—modeled after successful initiatives in Texas and Tennessee—to provide economic support and resources for the music industry.
