Magna Charta: A New Generation Of Arena Headliners Break Through

Madrid’s 17,453-capacity Movistar Arena is tops on the 2026 Magna Charta in the arena category, as the continent’s No. 1 indoor venue, with reported ticket sales of just under 2 million and a gross of just over $155 million.

Manuel Saucedo, Movistar Arena’s CEO, points to 10 nights by Spanish act Dani Martin and the opening four nights in November of Radiohead’s limited European residency shows as standouts of a busy year. He adds that urban and Latin music are the boom genres at the venues.

The 23,500-capacity Co-op Live in Manchester, UK, closed its first full year of operations with ticket sales of 1.4 million and a gross of just under $150 million, snapping at the heels of the stalwart Spanish arena now known as Movistar.

sGuy Dunstan, SVP & GM of Co-op Live, said 2025 was “a phenomenal year” for the venue. He points to Bruce Springsteen’s show on May 17, 2025, the Boss’ only indoor show of this European run, as a real standout.

The show, which some characteristic outspoken political sentiment The Boss has long been known for, made headlines and led to the release of a live EP recording, Land of Hope and Dreams, released on major streaming services.

Dunstan says Manchester is now absolutely on a par with London for arena shows. “We’re really fortunate that we’ve now got a venue that is at a level where major artists, when they’re only playing one or two cities [in the UK], want to play Co-op Live as part of limited residencies or limited city tours. We’re firmly part of that,” he says.

Other highlights in the new venue’s first full year of operation included stops by many of the year’s biggest tours, with multiples from Lady Gaga (two nights), Drake (three nights), Billie Eilish (four), Olivia Rodrigo (two), Chris Brown (two), Lionel Richie (two), Robbie Williams (two), Tyler, The Creator (two), Sabrina Carpenter (two) and still others.
The venue will also host the Brit Awards on Feb. 28, the first time in its 48-year history the event has been held outside London.

Dunstan sees this a major coup for the venue and the city where “we can stage an event of the scale of the Brits and of the importance to the industry of the Brits.”

On tap for the event are performances from Harry Styles, Olivia Dean and Wolf Alice. In what is often referred to as the British equivalent of the Grammys, top nominees this year include Olivia Dean, Lola Young and Sam Fender.

Oak View Group, which developed Co-op Live, is parent company to Pollstar.

Thomas Waldner, MD of the 16,000-capacity Wiener Stadthalle in Vienna, Austria, describes their 2025 as “exceptional,” with ticket sales of 549k and a gross of $44 million. The venue’s international profile will get a major boost in May when it will host the Eurovision Song Contest 2026.

He says massive leaps forward in live production present a rolling challenge for arenas. “Shows are becoming larger and more technically demanding, which places high expectations not only on infrastructure, but also on planning and logistics,” he explains.

“Ultimately, our goal is to remain a reliable, future-ready partner in an industry that’s constantly evolving.”

He adds, “The challenge of developing the big acts of tomorrow is real, as audiences expect outstanding performances and production values.”
Dunstan says the arena business is positively booming, saying they are already booking shows into 2028. He puts this partly down to the fact that whole new generations of arena headliners are emerging.

“What I’ve seen in the last 12 months is a massive energy and drive with a lot of artists who have broken into the arena market over the last 12 months and will continue to break into the arena market this year.”

Philipp Musshafen, director and CEO of the 11,200-capacity Hallenstadion in Zürich, Switzerland, says that they are somewhat insulated as their customers tend to be more affluent.

“We have an audience with high willingness to pay, a strong event culture, and very high expectations of quality,” he says. “That creates outstanding value per show. For international tours, that’s a key factor in Europe.”

Recent shows at the venue include Burna Boy, Bryan Adams, Big Time Rush, Till Lindemann, Il Volo, Böhse Onkelz, Rod Stewart and still others just in December of 2025.

He adds, “Audiences are demanding, but they reward quality, service, and safety.” Blockbuster shows this summer included Drake (two nights), Iron Maiden, Tyler, The Creator, Sabrina Carpenter and Hans Zimmer Live. The venue was ranked fourth by gross in Europe on this year’s Magna Charta (see page 50), with 847k ticket sales and a gross of $105.4 million. Rounding out the Top 10 in arenas are Laxness Arena in Cologne, Germany (No. 3), Ziggo Dome in Amsterdam (No. 5), The O2 London (No. 6), OVO Hydro in Glasgow (No. 7), 3Arena in Dublin (No. 8), AFAS Dome in Belgium (No. 9) and Paris La Defense Arena in Nanterre, France, (No. 10) which recently announced it was being acquired by Live Nation.

For Musshafen, the focus must be on customer experiences and not taking loyalty for granted. “It’s not only about ‘sold out,’ but about yield, fan experience and the overall quality of a show,” he suggests. “This is exactly where Switzerland stands out: higher ticket prices, strong purchasing power, excellent infrastructure – all making the market highly attractive economically for touring.”

Movistar Arena’s Saucedo cautions, however, that acts being rocketed to arena level via social media could cause long-term development problems if they lack experienced teams around them. “If they do not have the support of professionals, their careers are too short,” he says, adding that, even for well-managed acts, arena touring is “not an infinite market” and that quality must be paramount.

“Oversupply and low-quality offerings are causing damage,” he warns. “In the same way, venues must meet certain conditions so that artists can showcase their musical and aesthetic potential and fans can enjoy a rewarding experience. Tickets are expensive, and the show must live up to expectations.”
