The Band of Heathens have plenty to celebrate this week. The quintet from Austin, Texas, recently claimed the No. 1 spot on Americana charts with their single “Take The Cake” and new album, Country Sides, and they will be celebrating their 20th anniversary with a North American tour that kicks off today.

The “Country Sides Tour” starts tonight with a hometown show at ACL Live at The Moody Theater, and the routing includes stops at Turntable in Indianapolis, Chicago’s Garcia’s,  Ottawa Municipal Auditorium, Charleston’s Mountain Stage, Neighborhood Theatre in Charlotte, Nashville’s Grand Ole Opry House, Wolfsmith Heights in Houston and two nights at Gruene Hall in New Braunfels, Texas, before wrapping up at The Lexus Box Garden at Legacy Hall in Plano on June 13.

Select shows are co-billed with Jamestown Revival and feature Wilder Blue as a special guest.

“I am personally thrilled that The Band of Heathens are playing The Moody in Austin,” said Burt Stein, one of the band’s managers. “They certainly are worthy of that great venue. The show will be magical. … I would like to add that for me, The Band of Heathens are reminiscent of the talent and rise of the Eagles 50 years ago. I still am a big believer in the adage that ‘The cream rises.’ The Band of Heathens, with their new album Country Sides being No. 1 and their No. 1 “Take the Cake” on the Americana Radio chart speaks volumes.”

The Band of Heathens was founded two decades ago by Ed Jurdi and Gordy Quist and became a rag-tag rock band playing ballrooms and ascended onto the national stage as an independent act.

“There’s the conventional way and then there’s our way,” the band said in a statement. “Realizing that we needed to go our own way was the only way we could do this. Finding our own voice and standing firm in what made us different was a challenge early on, but we realized pretty quickly it was the only way to have longevity in this business.”

“We’re grateful to be 20 years into this and to have a fan base that has hopped on the creative journey with us wherever we have decided to turn,” Quist adds. “We’ve always felt like outsiders on an island. Without the muscle of a major label, we just focused on making organic music that resonates with us.”

Chad Staehly, co-manager of the band, says it’s “been an amazing ride” working with the Texas band and “watching them relentlessly hone their craft going on 20 years now. They came out of the gate in 2005 like a meteor and somehow they just keep getting better and better. I’ve never seen anything like it in 25 years of working in this business.”
