Amy Davidman’s start in the music industry began in the booking office of Bowery Ballroom and Mercury Lounge in New York City. Prior to landing the role, she had been living in the city for six months working at a nonprofit and “read to admit failure.” A colleague approached her and commended her organizational skills, as well as her love of music, and asked Davidman if she’d be interested in working for her boyfriend.

“I had an interview with owner Michael Swier who set aside my resume and said he just wanted to get to know me to see if he thought I could learn the job,” Davidman says. “Magically, none of my previous experience mattered (which was amazing since I was straight out of college). Once I started this job, I knew I was in the right place.” Swier and his wife, Margaret, played an essential role in Davidman’s
development. They ensured she was happy in her role and found her job fulfilling, ensuring she would stay in the music industry. Their kindness led to her own guiding philosophy throughout her career, which she explains is “Generosity of spirit.”

“This industry can be isolating and self-serving, so the more I extend myself to others the more I create a positive feedback loop to push others forward and bring them along for the ride,” she says. Davidman emphasizes the importance of networking not only with those above you in the industry, but with peers growing alongside you.

She notes community is essential in the music business, and can last through an entire career.

“Cis straight white men can be amazing allies when they take the time and speak up, join in, make it an issue they vocally care about,” she says. “I think there could be some attention to looking at feminine and masculine ways of doing business and analyzing both for strengths that all people can take ownership of. Women still have the opportunity to create space, leadership, and organize with each other. Every chance we have should be around coalition building within the spaces and communities we feel most comfortable so that we can harness our collective power.”
