‘The World Comes To Our Doorstep’: Sziget Launches Stage For Hungarian Artists

When Sziget returns to the island of freedom in the Hungarian capital of Budapest, Aug. 11-15, it will set up a stage dedicated to the incredible local talent the country has to offer. Pollstar reached out to one of the performing acts, Platon Karataev, to find out what it looks takes for an up-and-coming band from Hungary to make it in the biz.
The new stage at Sziget will be called the Budapest Park Stage, created in collaboration with one of the Hungarian capital’s most iconic concert venues, Budapest Park, and sponsored by Johnny Walker.
It will host four to five performances on each festival day, shining a spotlight on local music beyond what Sziget has been doing in the past. Local talent has always featured prominently on its lineup, but never had a dedicated stage.
Confirmed Hungarian performers include Platon Karataev, AWS, Analog Balaton, Kispál és a Borz, Irie Maffia, Parno Graszt, Beton.Hofi and Co Lee, with programming said to continue late into the night through afterparties inspired by Budapest’s nightlife and club culture.
Since Sziget welcomes visitors from over 100 nationalities each year, it festival provides a unique platform for local artists to introduce themselves to a global audience.
Pollstar reached out to Platon Karataev, whose sound is hard to describe with words. It’s generally melancholic, introspective, calm, infused with spiritual traditions, including Gregorian chants, mantras, folk themes, but many of their songs effortlessly open up into lush and heavy rock soundscapes, proving that still waters run deep.
The band’s performance at Sziget 2026 will be its seventh appearance at the festival, and singer and guitarist Gergely Balla told Pollstar, “since this is a major festival even on a global scale, such a performance naturally carries great prestige here at home, and we’re grateful to Sziget for accompanying us on this journey from the very beginning and holding our hands, allowing us to gradually move up from the smaller stages to the larger ones. Our music is more contemplative and inward-looking, so at festivals, listeners can expect a more introspective catharsis. Our album Napkötöző, released last year, will be the centerpiece of the show; alongside the quieter moments, there will also be more grandiose songs!”
Platon Karataev traveled a lot in previous years, playing at most of Europe’s important showcase festivals like ESNS, Reeperbahn Festival, Liverpool Sound City, but also Zandari Festa in Seoul, South Korea, or Roadburn in the Netherlands, a leading underground festival of heavy music of all types, among many other international events.

“We also toured, mainly in Germany, the Netherlands, and Switzerland,” said Balla, adding “right now, because of my young children, this lifestyle doesn’t fit into my life, so for the time being we’re focusing solely on Hungary, which is why we’re so excited about Sziget, because it’s like the world comes to our doorstep.”
When questions about the biggest challenge to building a sustainable career as an artists in 2026, Balla’s response it, just like his band’s music, introspective: “Maybe ‘challenge’ isn’t quite the right word for it, but perhaps it’s about always staying true to ourselves and not making compromises just to get ahead. The band is 10 years old now, and we see how the music industry works, what strategies pay off, but there are things we just can’t swallow anymore, and we see that because of this, we aren’t where we could be.
“At the end of the day, though, we’re still happier this way. We write the songs we want to write, we don’t monitor the expectations, and we can make a living from this, which is a privileged situation in itself. Everything changes from year to year, the noise is getting louder, and there are twists and turns coming, such as AI, that are currently unforeseeable in this situation, it’s best to follow our own inner compass.”
Sziget 2026 takes place on the Island of Freedom in Budapest, Hungary, Aug. 11-15. The confirmed lineup is led by Zara Larsson, Florence and the Machine, Bring Me The Horizon, Dijon, SOMBR, Skepta, Natasha Bedingfield, Jorja Smith, Peggy Gou, Soulwax, and many more.
Sziget CEO Tamás Kádár commented, “Our programme is really taking shape. From major international names to emerging talent on our dropYard and Buzz stages, and the launch of the Budapest Park Stage celebrating top Hungarian acts, this has been an exciting week for us.”
