Munich Arena has reached another major milestone on its journey, after the City of Freising approved the key planning decisions for the project, formally adopting the Zoning Plan and approving the corresponding amendment to the Land Use Plan.

Freising is the area just outside of Munich, where the new building will be erected.

The approval by the City of Freising marks “the successful completion of the municipal planning process,” according to a press release from the arena’s strategic partner, Live Nation.

Munich Arena is being developed as a new European flagship venue for live entertainment, with a capacity of 20,000 fans. Guided by a “music first” philosophy, the arena will combine “high-quality acoustics, excellent sight lines and production facilities to create an outstanding experience for fans, artists and promoters,” the press release continues.

Designed by Populous, its look “firmly anchors Munich Arena in the place it will call home: Bavaria, and more specifically the cultural landscape of the Munich metropolitan region. The venue’s spectacular diamond-shaped exoskeleton, inspired by the Bavarian flag, gives the arena a distinctive architectural identity.”

As an open venue, Munich Arena promises to be equally available to all artists, event organizers and promoters.

Located close to Munich International Airport, the arena will strengthen the region’s position as a destination for live entertainment, attracting major tours, international artists and audiences from across Germany, Europe and beyond, while contributing to the region’s cultural offering and generating economic benefits for Munich and Bavaria.

A study by Deloitte estimated that the arena would generate some €355 million ($406 million) in annual gross value added for Munich and the wider region once operational.

With the municipal planning process now complete, the project moves into its next phase of development ahead of the arena’s planned opening in 2029.
