Artist POV: How Billie Essco Is Building a Touring Career Without a Major Label

Billie Essco has spent two decades slowly growing into one of hip-hop’s most under-the-radar tastemakers, creating the high-fashion-forward side of Griselda Kids, now Griselda Records, a movement initially started by rappers Camouflage Monk, Westside Gunn, Conway the Machine, and Benny the Butcher. During this time, Essco built his own seven-album catalog while staying just outside the spotlight. This summer, the Buffalo, NY native is hopeful that will change; Essco is announcing his first-ever headlining tour alongside a new album, Brand New Era, representing a moment when his influence may finally serve as the basis for his own story.
Essco appears on the call with Pollstar fresh off a meeting with Buffalo-based hat brand company New Era, a partner of his clothing label CAFE CZEN, as he works out the business side of his next chapter: his first headlining tour.
“If I’m going all in on one of the biggest endeavors in my career thus far, putting together a real road show and really touch the people,” Essco tells Pollstar, “then I have to look fly while doing it. But before that, we have to look back at the journey, because how we got here is relevant to everything going forward.”
That journey runs largely through Essco’s decade-plus friendship with Westside Gunn, born Alvin Lamar Worthy, who founded Griselda Records in Buffalo with half-brother Conway the Machine and cousin Benny the Butcher, building the label out of his Hitler Wears Hermes mixtape series into one of independent hip-hop’s most influential imprints. Gunn is known for a “luxury street” style that fuses gritty storytelling with high fashion and fine art, an aesthetic that runs parallel to the fashion-world footing Essco helped cultivate for the crew and one that has quietly defined both their careers.
The two first worked together on “Satin Jackets,” from Essco’s 2014 indie album AVANT GARDE. As their friendship grew, Essco served as a cultural sounding board and de facto tour hand as Griselda’s profile rose. “That’s one of the things that I helped with, being on the road touring as a supporting act or hype man all these years while simultaneously building the knowledge of fashion and live shows,” Essco said. “Building that knowledge in the same role and way that Don C played for Kanye West, that was my role with Westside Gunn.”
A spontaneous, self-funded trip to Paris Fashion Week in January 2020 pushed that relationship into a new space. There, he and Gunn recorded the Monk-produced “327” and “French Toast,” with “327” (named for the New Balance sneaker) becoming an important track on Gunn’s Pray for Paris. The song, also featuring Tyler, the Creator and Joey Bada$$, introduced Essco’s catalog, seven albums deep by then, to an audience far beyond Griselda’s core fanbase.
That exposure came full circle on Gunn’s recently wrapped “Heal The World Tour,” where Essco appeared as a special guest in Athens, Amsterdam, and Lisbon. It was at the Milan show, at the 1,000-capacity Gate Milano, that Essco realized how far his name had traveled; enough to justify going out on his own. “I found out I got a large fan base in those cities outside of just my affiliation with Griselda, outside of major American markets,” Essco explained. “So that tour experience directly influenced me bringing the first step in my mission to life, what I’m calling my ‘connecting the dots phase.'”
That phase kicks off with Brand New Era, Essco’s second album of 2026 following Dress 4 Later, out July 17. Brand New Era represents growth after two decades of groundwork. In support of the record, Essco will hit the road, working with concert promoter Clockwork Music on financing and logistics.

Throughout his journey, Essco made a point of learning from tour managers and agents and chatting up venue talent buyers as a supporting act, knowing he’d “need to know how everything functions and breaks.” He says he’d “perform on any stage” and “go to every show” to sharpen his presence and study other artists’ sets – also how he learned he wanted to “go the indie route,” drawn by the promise of “greater financial and creative control.”
“In the beginning, we were a stage-to-stage show; performing at people’s bar mitzvahs…backyard shows. I mean, I did a show at a barn,” the rapper explains. “Now, my live show is one of my most polished sellable skills. And I got that way by performing anywhere and everywhere – if you got a stage and a mic, I’ll tell my story.”
Leading up to the tour’s official announcement, Essco plans to “flood the market” with music. A third 2026 album, Where in the World is Billie Essco 3, and a collaboration album with Camouflage are also coming.
Essco is hopeful this tour will be the start of a run from clubs to theaters – where everyone wears CAFE CZEN merch, the financial engine of the tour.
“Taking what I learned from Griselda and my early days getting this tour experience out the mud, I can leverage my relationships in different clubs paired with tools like Spotify for Artists to determine where we take this first show. And if that leads us to another barn, those farmers gon’ get the best show they ever seen.”
