Glen Hansard’s Family Announces Details For Public Wake & Funeral 

Fans will get the chance to pay their respects to Glen Hansard with a public wake early next week at the Royal Hospital Kilmainham’s Baroque Chapel in Dublin, followed by a funeral at St. Patrick’s Cathedral. A statement from the beloved Irish singer/songwriter’s family notes that “music at the funeral will be provided by Glen’s friends and family.”

Details about who will be performing has not been revealed yet.

Hansard, who was also an actor and rose to fame thanks to his role in the Academy Award-winning 2007 indie film “Once,” died in a motorcycle crash outside of Dublin early Wednesday at age 56. 

Hansard starred in “Once” with Markéta Irglová, who made up the rock duo The Swell Season, and the film was awarded the Academy Award for Best Original Song for “Falling Slowly.” He also played a musician in the 1991 movie “The Commitments.” 

Along with his time in The Swell Season, Hansard’s musical career included serving as frontman for rock band The Frames and releasing a number of solo albums. The LP Didn’t He Ramble was nominated for a Grammy for Best Folk Album in 2016.

A number of tributes have poured in from fellow artists like Bruce Springsteen and politicians including President Barack Obama, who included Hansard’s single “Song of Good Hope” in his Summer Playlist. 

“Here are some of the songs I’ve been listening to this summer. It starts with a song Michelle and I love by Glen Hansard, a great musician who passed tragically this week. Our hearts go out to his family,” President Obama wrote.

Following the devastating news of Glen Hansard’s untimely death earlier this week, Glen’s family would like to share details of his memorial arrangements.

A public wake will take place in the Baroque Chapel at IMMA, Royal Hospital Kilmainham, Dublin 8 on Monday 3rd August between 11am and 4pm. Glen will lie in repose for those wishing to pay their respects.

Glen’s funeral will take place at St. Patrick’s Cathedral, St. Patrick’s Close, Dublin 8 on Tuesday 4th August at 1:30pm. The funeral will be open to the public, however access inside the Cathedral will be extremely limited given the numbers expected.

There will be a public address system in place outside the cathedral, however mourners are also encouraged to view online where the funeral will be streamed on RTE News and RIP.IE

Music at the funeral will be provided by Glen’s friends and family.
