Dolly Parton: Boxoffice Highlights From A Multiple-Decade Live Career

The tributes and memorial accolades following the passing of Dolly Parton point to her legendary impact on the world of entertainment throughout multiple decades. And part of her multifaceted story as a musical and cultural force is her longstanding career on the concert stage.

Throughout The Pollstar Era that stretches over 40 years, the iconic country music artist was featured on the charts almost from the very beginning. Her first appearance in Pollstar was just one year after the publication was founded. She appeared at Cleveland’s Front Row Theatre in August 1982 and performed 10 shows, selling a total of 21,142 tickets during the run.

Altogether during the past 44 years, with 436 of her concerts reported and stored in the archives, the combined grosses from her shows total $168 million, while ticket sales between 1982 and her last concert tour a decade ago reach 2.81 million.

Her 2016 tour ran from June through December in support of the album Pure & Simple, released by Dolly Records and RCA Records in August of that year. Set in a wide range of venue types and sizes, from casino venues to stadiums, she performed over 60 shows. With box-office results at 48 of the performances reported to Pollstar, she grossed $26.1 million from 330,956 sold tickets, an average of $544,391 and 6,895 tickets per show.

On the “Pure & Simple Tour,” Parton’s largest attendance was recorded at the Hollywood Bowl with 28,321 tickets sold for shows on Oct. 1-2, 2016, but her largest ticket count at a single venue in this century was 32,761 from two arena concerts at The O2 in London in July 2008 during her “Backwoods Barbie Tour.”

Her career-high attendance for a single engagement, however, was recorded prior to 2000, stretching all the way back to 1985. At a co-headlining event with Kenny Rogers, the country superstars sold 33,792 tickets for two shows at Pacific Coliseum in Vancouver during January of that year. The $648,377 gross from those shows, valued at more than $2 million today, came from tickets priced at $17.50 and $19.50. Rogers was her touring partner often during the late 1980s. Between 1984 and 1990, the archives show 63 co-headlining dates for the pair, with ticket sales hitting 901,963.

Parton’s last concert appearance in her home state of Tennessee was in honor of Rogers. She performed at the “All In For The Gambler: Kenny Rogers’ Farewell Concert Celebration” on Oct. 25, 2017 at Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena. That star-studded event drew a sellout crowd of 15,530 and included a performance of their classic duet “Islands in the Stream.”
