Harry Styles MSG Residency Night 3: Setlist, Surprises, and Highlights

Harry Styles continued onto the third night of his sold-out 30-night residency at Madison Square Garden as a part of his global ‘Together, Together’ tour on a breezy Saturday night on Aug. 29 in New York City. Styles announced his reentry onto the legendary stage with an eccentric outfit, strolling from backstage dressed in an all-black suit with a fluffy scarf hanging from his neck and matching black shades.

The ever-eclectic superstar wasted no time getting the party started, launching into fan-favorites such as “Dance No More” and “Carolina.” And then the opening composition for “Music for a Sushi Restaurant” crept into the arena. An overwhelming wave of cheers and screams almost completely drowned out the song, with only the bass audible from the floor. A strobe light show accompanied the hit song, sending the audience into a faux-dance party and almost euphoria.

Shortly after finishing an electric run of “Cinema,” “Adore You,” “Watermelon Sugar,” and “Taste Back,” Harry told the crowd that he needed to take a brief “gentleman’s room” break. So he had one of his backup singers, Sarah Jones, take the reins on the next performance. What followed was an acoustic, stripped-down, Harry Styles-less version of “Sweet Creature” that sent the crowd into a lullaby-like state. Concert-goers sang along as nearby fans belted out the lyrics with eyes full of tears. For the uninitiated, “Sweet Creature,” a track from his 2017 self-titled debut album, is a song about two people facing challenges in their relationship. However, despite all the difficulties in their way, they’re convinced they belong together — an apt number that perfectly fit the messaging of his ongoing global tour.

A bathroom break and a slew of fan-favorite cuts later, the fans were treated to another oldie but a goodie in “Kiwi.” Electric guitars were the first instruments to greet us at MSG, closely followed by a thunderous assortment of drums and a funky sax. When the composition finally began, the ground began to shake beneath the floor seats in response to the crowd jumping up and down in unison. Harry kept his faithful fans engaged with performances of “American Girls” (”I know there are a couple of you lovely ladies in here tonight”) and, of course, his mega smash-hit, “As It Was.”

Harry started the introspective portion of the concert at this point, looking inward with tracks like “Carla’s Song” and “Coming Up Roses.” After a brief pause to take in the sea of cheers, Styles spoke directly to his “family,” or what other artists would call fans.

“This show is impossible without you…every last one of you in this building tonight,” the UK native began. “I played here for the first time when I was 18; this building is special, NYC, MSG is special, the energy is very special here, and it means a lot to me. I appreciate you all being here. Among you, I see some new faces, some familiar faces. Thank you for trusting me over all of these years.”

“I took a little time from touring…the last time we were here…and it was a great reminder of how fragile and beautiful life can be. I want to remind you that what we built together…it doesn’t belong to me. It is so much bigger than a musician you like. Look around you; you’re not alone. From the bottom of my heart, if you have been listening for one year, five years, ten years, thank you. I want to remind you that when all of this is finished, when the songs are finished, when there are no more performances, there is a whole world out there waiting for you. And it’s yours,” he concluded before launching into “Sign Of The Times” to punctuate his speech.

Closing out the show was the chaotic “Aperture,” which saw Harry transform into “DJ Styles” as many fans in the audience affectionately called him. Audience members began raising their MSG-exclusive Harry Styles ‘Together, Together’ rainbow-illuminated light-up cups as they bopped to the techno-tinged track. The song lifted the energy back to the carefree vibe that permeated Madison Square Garden when Harry first arrived in his latest kooky outfit, and in the end, it left the arena feeling a bit more together, together.
