Woman Killed In Shooting At Swiss Rave

Swiss police have detained the prime suspect in a shooting at a rave in Aarau, which killed one woman and injured five in the early morning hours of Sunday, Aug. 30.

The woman who lost her life was a 22 year old Italian, the condition of the five injured festivalgoers, aged between 24 and 31 years, was no longer life-threatening at the time of this writing.

Promoters of Aarau Rave expected some 3,500 people attending the event. The shooting occurred right at the end of the festival, when there were reportedly some 100 people still on site.

At press time, local police had arrested a 43-year old Swiss national. News reports state that two different types of bullet casings were found on site, raising further questions about the shooter’s motivation. Police hasn’t yet concluded whether this was a terrorist act, a rampage by a lone gunman, or an otherwise criminally motivated act.

The promoters of Aarau Rave, which kicked off Saturday, Aug. 29, with a lineup led by Henri Bergmann, Ronny Grauer, Sam Madi and more, released a statement expressing their shock and grief. “A rave should always be a place of joy and love. Never a place, where people are killed, injured or put in fear,” they wrote.

They also expressed their condolences, and vowed to do everything in their power to support the police’s work.
