“Dialing in the right balance between being a designer, a mentor, and as impactful and inspiring a leader as possible” is how Mallie describes his greatest success of the past year. Mallie explains that balancing act also shapes his approach to growth at the global architecture and design firm, Populous. The main challenge, he explains, has been “ensuring that we have the right resources in place to continue to excel as we grow, always looking to improve, from one year to the next.”

Mallie sees this drive for improvement in the live events industry as a whole. “The desire for authentic live experiences is at an all-time high,” he said. “In many ways, live experiences are the antidote to the ‘artificial age’ we have entered.” This belief guides Populous’s approach to hospitality and the fan experience. “Every touchpoint is an opportunity to influence experience,” he continues. The global director points to things like natural landscaping, tailgating spaces, regional materials in premium areas, and carefully integrated technology. “Every moment is an opportunity to use design to better the fan experience.”

On technology, Mallie is honest about the industry’s current relationship with artificial intelligence. “We’re all in the same place right now, facing the steepness of the learning curve,” he said. Populous has also launched an Applied R&D specialty focused on robotics, advanced materials and fabrication techniques. This puts the firm at the forefront of design innovation. This forward-looking approach carries into the firm’s philanthropic work, including support for NOMA (the National Organization of Minority Architects) and the ACE Mentor Program, alongside employee-driven volunteer and matching programs.

Mallie is excited about Populous’s work on the new Philadelphia Arena, which will be home to the 76ers, Flyers, and the city’s new WNBA team. The arena is being built where the old Spectrum once stood, and the project aims to “connect Philadelphia’s rich history with a future-forward design that will enhance fan experience from the moment [fans] arrive on-site.”
