In December, Venue operator VenuWorks announced live music industry veteran Robert Thomas as the new executive director overseeing the company’s Cedar Rapids facilities. In this role, Thomas manages operations for Alliant Energy PowerHouse, Paramount Theatre, McGrath Amphitheater and the ImOn Ice Arena Cedar Rapids.

With background on both the venue and talent buying side, including time with Live Nation, VenuWorks founder and CEO Steve Peters said Thomas was “an exceptional choice for the leadership role.”

What do you consider your greatest successes over the last year?
“We’ve had a number of world-class shows in Cedar Rapids with artists like Hudson Westbrook, Alice Cooper, Russell Dickerson and comedians such as Nate Bargatze and John Mulaney. I think these are noteworthy in any market, but being in Cedar Rapids makes them especially awesome.”

What were the biggest challenges you faced over the past year and how did you overcome them?
“The biggest challenge was a 1,100-mile cross-country move with dogs, a child and a gecko. Other than that, nothing to note. The team here in Cedar Rapids is experienced and has been awesome to work with.”

How has your company improved upon hospitality and the overall fan experience?
“We are continually improving the hospitality program and fan experience. The key is fundamentals: a clean building, fast and friendly entry, a trained staff, minimal lines, and quick service at the concession stands.”

Who is the mentor, colleague or person who changed your life?
“There are many: Frank Hulefeld, Kevin McNamme, Chris Joselyn, Garrett Zimmerman, Tony Adams, Tim Jordan, Kirt Lee, Dan Kemer, Lance Beaty, HR Cook, Michael Silva, Steve Peters. A lot of great people have helped me along the way.”

What’s next?
“I’m excited to continue strengthening Cedar Rapids as a must-play, well-run stop for touring shows specifically at Alliant Energy PowerHouse, McGrath Amphitheatre and Paramount Theatre.”
