EXIT festival together with P+US, the electronic music brand of live entertainment powerhouse Venture Lifestyle, launched Starlight Festival in spectacular fashion against the backdrop of the Great Pyramids of Giza, Oct. 9-10.

Fans arrived from 114 countries and witnessed a few milestone moments, including Charlotte de Witte’s first-ever show in Egypt. While an exact capacity-figure wasn’t obtainable at the time of this writing, organizers stated that Starlight Festival was “the largest electronic music event at the site since Jean-Michel Jarre’s millennium concert in 1999.”

De Witte was joined on the main stage bill by Michael Bibi, Adriatique, Indira Paganotto, Enrico Sangiuliano, Vintage Culture, and Pete Tong. Standout live sets came from WhoMadeWho and Satori, and Gioli & Assia who closed the weekend at Sunday’s farewell show in Cairo.

In total, more than 60 international and regional artists performed across several stages on the historic site. EXIT brought its No Sleep stage to Giza, which hosted Charlie Sparks, BIIA, Layla Benitez, Paolo Ferrara and Olympe. Fiona Kraft, Floyd Lavine, Lanna, Coeus, Reblok, Clonee and Deer Jade also performed.

Alex Tripi, co-founder and CEO of the Pete Tong DJ Academy, who got invited to the premiere, summed up his impressions in an Instagram post after the festival. He said, “the level of production was insane, but this is not the best part. The best part was the energy. Being under the pyramids is something unique. You could feel the energy of thousands of years of humanity through the music, through the spirit of everyone that was there, and we were all connected.

“I don’t want to get too emotional, but this was it. I witnessed the beginning of something unique. Trust me, every big DJ in the coming years will love to play this festival. They want to be there with the Pyramids in the back and the crowd in front with this connection.”

The production was designed by Sila Sveta, the multimedia design studio behind some of the most-renowned global ceremonies and concerts. Its light show used optical illusions to make the pyramids appear to float above the main stage, setting a new benchmark for visual artistry in the global festival scene.

The success of Starlight carries even greater significance as the festival marked the culmination of EXIT’s world tour, launched after the festival was forced to leave its home country following its public support for student-led protests in Serbia.
