After giving European fans the time of their lives, Green Day kicked off the North American leg of their “Saviors Tour” in front of 41,000-plus rockers at Nationals Park in Washington, D.C. on July 29. The band hailing from Northern California played a career-spanning 37-song set, which not only included songs from their latest studio album Saviors but also performances of iconic albums Dookie and American Idiot in their entirety.

Green Day kicked off the evening with “The American Dream Is Killing Me,” the first single off Saviors, and went straight into the celebration of the 30th anniversary of Dookie, a monumental album that not only launched the band into stardom but changed the early ’90s rock scene that was predominantly grunge.

The band brought its signature energy into the Dookie performance and went all out on the show’s production, bringing out a 42-foot-long inflatable plane identical to the one on the famous album cover.

After finishing up the 15-song LP from 1994, Green Day kept the energy going with tunes from the latest album, including “Look Ma, No Brains!” and “Dilemma,” and sprinkled in a few classics like “Minority” and “Brain Stew” before diving into 2004’s American Idiot, an album that reintroduced the punk band to a new generation of rockers with its politically-charged music (released during the George W. Bush administration).

The special night opened with sets from ‘90s rock staples The Smashing Pumpkins and Rancid as well as teenage quartet The Linda Lindas.
