Lorde Debuts New Single ‘What Was That’ In NYC’s Washington Square Park

Hundreds of fans gathered around Washington Square Park in New York City on April 22 after shared via her fan text line, “Meet me in the park Tonight 7pm -xx.” However, the crowd she drew was so large that police and park rangers shut the event down.
“I am truly Amazed by how many of you showed up !!! But they’re telling me you gotta disperse… I’m so sorry.”
That didn’t prevent Lorde’s fans from sticking around, and within the hour Blood Orange’s Devonté Hynes (who is speculated to have contributed to Lorde’s next album) arrived with a speaker playing her upcoming single, “What Was That.” He led the group out of the park, and Lorde eventually appeared at 9 p.m. to stand on a wooden platform at the center of the water fountain to sing along.
Fans documented the entire ordeal on TikTok,
