Reed would be the first to say that opinions are like, ahem, rear ends. And he has said from early on that he doesn’t care about how the world accepts this latest project.

But “accept” doesn’t appear to be the right terminology. When one song, “The View,” was released, Rolling Stone gave it four stars out of five (David Fricke interviewed Reed and Metallica about the project back in June).

And webzine Drowned In Sound called it Metallica’s “most interesting and engaging album in ages.”

But then there’s this cat:

And a Chicago Sun-Times blog review calls the album “repellent.” 

Also, the always-succinct Pitchfork gave it one out of 10 stars. 

But most importantly, Hitler doesn’t like it.

By the way, yes, there is a thread already discussing if it’s the worst album of all time. It’s a possibilty, according to a review in The Quietus.

Of all time? It’s a polarizing statement but, to its credit, Pollstar’s research team did find that “The View” on YouTube has a far-greater percentage of “dislikes” (15,181 dislikes to 4,803 likes) to The Shaggs’ “My Pal Foot Foot.”  (112 dislikes / 531 likes).

“I don’t have any fans left,” Reed told USA Today. “After Metal Machine Music, they all fled. Who cares? I’m essentially in this for the fun of it.”
