Pearl Jam & U2 At The Movies
The documentary about Bono and company, titled “From The Sky Down,” opens the festival Sept. 8. A post on U2’s website notes that the film marks the first time in 38 years that TIFF has opened with a documentary.
“From The Sky” examines the impact of the band’s 1991 album Achtung Baby through new interviews, stories and unseen footage from Berlin and Dublin.
The film was directed by Davis Guggenheim, whose previous films include “An Inconvenient Truth,” “Waiting For Superman” and “It Might Get Loud.”
The Pearl Jam documentary will make its debut a few days later on Sept. 10. “Pearl Jam Twenty” celebrates the band’s 20+ years together from the group’s formation to its journey over the years dealing with fame. The film includes clips gathered from more than 1,200 hours of rarely and never-before-seen footage in addition to over 24 hours of recent interviews with the band and live footage from Pearl Jam’s shows.
After playing the film festival, “Pearl Jam Twenty” will hit select theaters worldwide on Sept. 20 followed by a full week run beginning Sept. 23 in key markets. On Oct. 21 the film will make its U.S. television premiere as part of the PBS “American Masters” series. Fans can enjoy the film in their own homes when it’s released worldwide on DVD Oct. 25.
