Formed when Frantz and Weymouth’s other band, The Talking Heads, went on a hiatus in 1981, Tom Tom Club quickly became a favorite in dance clubs with singles like “Genius Of Love” and “Wordy Rappinghood.” In 2010 the band toured the U.S. for the first time in 10 years and released a new album, Genius Of Live, consisting of songs from the group’s Live At The Clubhouse album plus a Latin alternative remix of “Genius Of Love.”

Turns out Live At The Clubhouse has a 9/11 connection. The album captures the band performing for friends at Frantz and Weymouth’s home studio in Connecticut one month after the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. According to Frantz, it was a time of great uncertainty, not only for the band but for everyone around them.

“We have a really exciting band and wanted to record the band for posterity while we were all together,” Frantz said. “Who knew if we would still be all together in the future? This was October immediately following the harrowing events of September 11 and we wanted to do something positive and fun to counteract the sad and confused feeling people were experiencing at the time.”

Previously announced dates for the Tom Tom Club’s 30th anniversary include Amagansett, N.Y., at Stephen Talkhouse June 3; Pittsburgh at the Three Rivers Arts Festival June 4; Annapolis, Md., at Rams Head On Stage June 5; Sellersville, Pa., at Sellersville Theatre June 6 and Ridgefield, Conn., at Ridgefield Theatre June 10.

New U.K. dates include Cardiff University July 14; London’s Jazz Café July 15-17; Birmingham at The Institute July 19 and Glasgow at ABC July 20. The band also plays Dublin’s Harmonic Weekender Festival July 22 before returning to the States and an appearance at the Music To Know Festival in East Hampton, N.Y., Aug. 13.
