The 22-year-old Tempah, who released his first album last year, has four nominations, including British male solo artist and album of the year. Plan B and Mumford and Sons each have three.
Other British contenders include grown-up boy band Take That and London rockers The xx.
Eminem, Alicia Keys, Katy Perry, Kings of Leon and Kanye West are among the international nominees.
Acts including Arcade Fire and Rihanna are due to perform during the show at London’s O2 Arena on Tuesday.
Most of the awards are chosen by 1,000 music critics and record industry figures, with several decided by public vote.
