Priscilla Parker, 71, president of the We Remember Elvis Fan Club, told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review that she and her friends didn’t want the plaque auctioned off with other arena memorabilia, as planned by the city-county Sports & Exhibition Authority that owns the building.

So Parker and four friends raised $1,157 for that plaque that was installed on The King’s birthday in 1982. With Mellon Arena closed and the new Consol Energy Center opened across the street, the Authority planned to auction off several pieces of memorabilia, according to the Tribune-Review.

The Elvis plaque garnered the most attention, and complaints. In the end, the Authority agreed to donate the plaque to the Sen. John Heinz History Center. And that’s fine with Priscilla and her friends.

“If they want to put it in the Heinz History Center, that is fine with us,” Parker told the paper. “It shouldn’t be in somebody’s private collection.”
