Leif Garrett Pleads, Record Label Founder Busted
You could say Garrett was the Justin Bieber of the late 1970s. His long curly locks and boyish grin adorned teen-based mags the world over while his recordings of “Runaround Sue,” “Surfin’ USA” and “I Was Made For Dancin” were Top 40 staples.
He also appeared in several movies, including “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band,” “Skateboard” and three “Walking Tall” flicks among his film credits.
But that was then. These days Garrett seems to spend most of his time getting out of trouble. Arrested earlier this year in a Los Angeles subway station for possessing heroin, 48-year-old Garrett today pleaded no contest and was sentenced to a court-ordered drug treatment program.
If you’re thinking Garrett got off easy on this one, we’d certainly agree with you. But while the arrest and sentencing will soon be forgotten by most, his collection of ‘70s hits will follow him the rest of his life. Such is justice.
Meanwhile, federal investigators have arrested more than 40 people in New York and Florida on charges they were involved in a wholesale marijuana ring.
Among those rounded up is Kareem Burke, who partnered with Jay-Z and Damon Dash in the 1990s to start Roc-A-Fella records.
But Burke wasn’t the only notable arrested. Authorities report an employee of High Times magazine was also busted.
The arrests are the result of an 18-month investigation culminating with agents seizing $1 million in cash and nearly 200 pounds of pot grown in Florida and smuggled to New York.
Kind of puts Florida’s “Sunshine State” nickname in a whole new light, doesn’t it?
