The Dismemberment Plan was formed in 1993 in Washington, D.C., and named after a line in the 1993 comedy “Groundhog Day.”

“There’s a guy [in the film] who chases after Bill Murray and tries to keep selling him different types of insurance and “the dismemberment plan” was one of them. It just stuck,” singer/guitarist Travis Morrison told ink19.com.

The band last toured together in 2003. After revealing its plans to break up, The Dismemberment Plan played its final show Sept. 1 at 9:30 Club in Washington, D.C. The group reunited in 2007 to play two benefit shows.

In January 2011 the D-Plan will once again reunite thanks to the re-issue of the group’s third studio album, Emergency & I.

The band announced the reunion tour in a post on its website.

“When getting together to sort out the re-issue, we got in the basement a few times to make noise, run through some songs, shake out some cobwebs. It felt good. So to celebrate the release of the reissue, we’re going to play a handful of shows. Unfortunately with everyone’s schedule being crazy, we only have time for a few on the East Coast.”

The tour begins Jan. 21 at Black Cat in Washington, D.C. Fans can also catch the D-Plan at 9:30 Club in Washington, D.C. (Jan. 22), Starlight Ballroom in Philadelphia (Jan. 27), Paradise Rock Club in Boston (Jan. 28) and Webster Hall in New York (Jan. 29).

Tickets go on sale Friday, Sept. 17 at 12 p.m. EST.

“We’re not planning a new record,” bassist Eric Axelson told the Washington Post’s Click Track when asked if the band was permanently getting back together. “But we’re doing these shows and taking it day to day after that.”

Emergency & I is being reissued on vinyl Jan. 11 on Barsuk Records. The album, which was re-mastered from the original 1/2-inch tapes, will be released on 180-gram double-vinyl. The re-issue will include lyrics, bonus tracks from hard-to-find releases, an oral history of making the alum and pictures from the era.
