New Charge In Vietnamese Singer Pepper Spray Case
Prosecutors have added another charge against an anti-communist activist who allegedly squirted pepper spray into the eyes of a Vietnamese singer during a concert in Santa Clara.
Prosecutors allege Ly Tong sprayed pop star Dam Vinh Hung on Sunday night after Hung bent down from the stage to accept what appeared to be a gift from Tong.
The 61-year-old Tong was charged earlier this week with four felony counts, including unauthorized use of tear gas. He has pleaded not guilty to those charges.
Prosecutors added assault with a deadly weapon during a hearing Friday. Tong did not enter a plea to the additional charge.
Also on Friday, the judge in the case reduced his bail to $75,000. Tong’s attorney, Tam Nguyen, says he expects his client to be released Friday night after he was able to post the lower bail.
