The gig, which will take place May 7 at Le Poisson Rouge, “represents version two which spanned the years 1985-1987 … with a bit of cross-over into 1988,” to quote Anton Fier, The Golden Palominos’ “creator and destroyer.”

Besides vocalist Syd Straw, who many people equate most with this era of the band, the lineup features Jody Harris and Jim Campilongo on guitar, Tony Maimone on bass, special guest Robert Kidney on vocals and guitar and Fier on drums.

During the two-year (“plus a bit of cross-over”) tenure of this assemblage of the band, they released two albums, Visions of Excess and Blast of Silence, which will both be featured at the May 7 show.

So why bring back a band that during its 1981-2000 life included collaborators like Art Lindsay, John Zorn, Fred Firth, Michael Stipe, John Lydon, Straw, Richard Thompson, Peter Blegvad, Carla Bley, Jack Bruce, Bernie Worrell, Lori Carlson, Bootsy Collins, Nicole Blackman, Bill Laswell and Nicky Skopelitis?

“I am generally not the nostalgic type or one to look back,” Fier explained. “And in the past 23 years since the last Golden Palominos live gig I have never before considered reviving a past version. But recently I heard Syd sing and I was struck by the beauty of it … and wanted to work with her again.

“So we’re giving this a try here and if it’s fun and exciting for us we might consider doing it again on a more full time basis in the fall. So this is an experiment … to see if it is possible to go back in order to go forward.”

Joining The Golden Palominos at Le Poisson Rouge are “literary rockers” The Wingdale Community Singers (featuring author Rick Moody on guitar and vocals) and The Walking Hellos (featuring best-selling author Myla Goldberg of Bee Season fame on banjo and accordion).
