Britney Spears Auctions Dress For Haiti

Britney Spears has joined the list of celebrities publicly donating towards Haiti relief, but rather than writing a big check the pop singer is auctioning off the dress she wore to the 2008 MTV Video Music Awards.

There’s nothing like killing three birds with one stone – proceeds from the auction help Haitian earthquake victims, a fan can win a gorgeous piece of memorabilia and Britney gets to clean out her closet.

Before putting the dress up for auction, Britney first had to get a court commissioner to give the idea the thumbs up. The 28-year-old singer needed to ask permission for the seemingly simple action because she is still under a court-ordered conservatorship.

The conservatorship was put in place in February 2008 after Britney repeatedly made the headlines for crazy antics including shaving her head, hitting a paparazzo’s car with her umbrella and being hospitalized for psychiatric evaluation.

Britney’s father Jamie is in controls of the singer’s personal and financial affairs.

On Friday Britney met with Superior Court Commissioner Reva Goetz for the first time since wrapping up last year’s world tour promoting her Circus album. Goetz closed the courtroom to the public and reporters, explaining that medical and sensitive personal information would be discussed. Britney’s father and an attorney were also in attendance.

A court commissioner gave the OK to the auction in addition to allowing Britney’s father to get rid of some of the singer’s items that were used in her “Circus” tour. The items, which were described as “valueless,” are currently taking up several storage containers.

The dress Britney wore to the 2008 MTV VMAs is significant in that the award show marked the beginning of her public comeback. She picked up three awards at the Sept.7, 2008 event, scoring Video Of The Year, Best Fame Video and Best Pop Video for “Piece of Me.”
