Destroying The Last Bit Of Respect Anyone Might Have Had For John Phillips

Phillips is the offspring of John Phillips and his first wife, Susan Adams. John Phillips died from heart failure in 2001.

According to People, the 49-year-old Phillips revealed the incestuous affair in her new book, “High On Arrival.”

The revelation is the latest by Phillips, who in the past has disclosed rather sordid chapters of her life, like a one-night-stand with Mick Jagger when she was still a teenager as well as her druggie days when she often got stoned right along with father John.

Phillips says she first had sex with her father on the night before her wedding to Jeff Sessler in 1979. At that time the 19-year-old Phillips played the oldest teenage daughter on the CBS sitcom “One Day At A Time,” which also starred Valerie Bertinelli as her sibling.

“On the eve of my wedding, my father showed up, determined to stop it,” Phillips writes. “I had tons of pills, and Dad had tons of everything too. Eventually I passed out on Dad’s bed.

“My father was not a man with boundaries. He was full of love, and he was sick with drugs. I woke up that night from a blackout to find myself having sex with my own father.”

Adding to the sleaze factor is Phillips admitting that she wasn’t sure if the wedding eve episode was the first incestuous moment with her father, or only the first she can remember.

“Had this happened before? I don’t know,” Phillips writes. “All I can say is it was the first time I was aware of it.”

But wait there’s more.

During an appearance on “The Oprah Winfrey Show” which airs today, Phillips said her siblings “definitely have a problem with this.”

Phillips also told Winfrey she first tried cocaine when she was 11 years old; that her father eventually taught her how to roll joints and even injected cocaine into her.

According to Phillips, the consensual relationship lasted 10 years and ended when she became pregnant but didn’t know who the father was. “Papa” John paid for an abortion, and she says she never let him touch her again.

In response to Phillips’s allegations, Winfrey read a statement from Genevieve Waite, John Phillips’ wife at the time of the alleged affair, claiming the Mamas & The Papas leader was “incapable, no matter how drunk or drugged he was, of having such a relationship with his own child.”

Meanwhile, Phillips, while calling the relationship with her dad “an abuse of power” and a “betrayal,” says she forgave him on his deathbed.

“I can’t be the only one this has happened to,” Phillips said. “Someone needs to put a face on consensual incest.”
