It was McCartney’s first appearance at the Ed Sullivan Theater since the Beatles debuted in the U.S. on the “Ed Sullivan Show” 45 years ago.

McCartney reminded the audience of another Beatles performance by playing atop the theater’s marquee before the show, harkening back to the band’s last public concert in 1969 on the roof of the Apple building in London.

Over the years many bands have mimicked the performance, including U2, which played on the roof of a Los Angeles building for the music video of “Where The Streets Have No Name,” and vocal group The Be Sharps, which reunited atop a Springfield tavern in 1993.

While appearing on the Sullivan Theater marquee, McCartney played “Coming Up,” which also marks a “last time” of sorts. The song, originally released in 1980, was the last single by Paul McCartney’s post-Beatles band, Wings.

McCartney also treated New Yorkers to another Wings classic – “Band On The Run.”
