Hosted by Los Angeles disc jockey Jimmy O’Neil, who, along with his wife created the program, “Shindig” worked when others failed, mostly because O’Neill believed in that “new sound” 1960s kids were listening too.

Another reason for the program’s success was that it aired on the ABC Television Network. At that time ABC was always miles behind competing networks CBS and NBC. Because of this, the network wasn’t afraid to take chances.

Sure, programs like “Ed Sullivan” often included a rock ‘n’ roll band in its weekly lineup, but that was always sandwiched between more “adult” fare, like Italian TV kiddie show puppet Topo Gigio, or a juggling act from whichever circus happened to be in town that week.
