Aiken is stepping into the role of Sir Robin, which was originated by David Hyde Pierce, for a run that begins January 18 and wraps May 4.

The thoroughly irreverent “Spamalot” has a book written by Python member Eric Idle that was “lovingly ripped-off” from the screenplay of the cult favorite, “Monty Python and the Holy Grail.”

The film, which hilariously details King Arthur’s quest for the Holy Grail, was written by and starred all six Pythons – Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Idle, Terry Jones and Michael Palin.

For the unitiated, here’s Sara Ramirez (“Grey’s Anatomy”) delivering one of the songs from “Spamalot” that won her a Tony Award at the 2005 awards ceremony.

The musical version is helmed by legendary director Mike Nichols and features music written by Idle and John DuPrez.

Aiken explained the names involved in the show made signing on a no-brainer.

“Let’s not lie, the chance to work with legendary creative minds like Mike Nichols and Eric Idle is, on its own, a reason to jump at this opportunity,” the singer said.

Idle is also pretty jazzed about having the former “American Idol” contestant join the round table.

“This is great news,” the comedian said. “I have been a Clay Aiken fan ever since I took my daughter to see him live on the second season of ‘American Idol’ and she held up a big sign of his name. Maybe now it should say ‘American Idle.'”
