Nastasia and White first began working together at the All Tomorrow’s Parties Festival in 2002, just before the recording of Nastasia’s album Run to Ruin. White, who is best known for his work with Australian instrumental rock band Dirty Three, has been a perennial member of the singer’s backing band ever since, appearing with her around the world.
The concept for You Follow Me, their latest project together, came together during recording sessions for 2006’s On Leaving. The pair played a handful of low-profile gigs together in Brooklyn and Chicago, and decided there was something special about the way the songs sounded with just the two of them.
Nastasia decided it would be better to start from scratch, rather than rehash previous work, so she wrote a dozen new songs for the album. The duo spent a month in New York developing and arranging the songs with Nastasia’s long-time companion and musical organizer Kennan Gudjonsson, before traveling to Chicago to record with producer Steve Albini, who proclaimed the project “a cool-ass record.”
