Robert Plant’s New Bag
Priory of Brion is a bit of a mystery in the States but the band has been known to surface from time to time in the U.K. The group made an appearance on the acoustic stage at the Glastonbury Festival this year, where Plant made certain his name wasn’t mentioned in the ads or promotional materials.
Priory of Brion is apparently based in Plant’s home town of Kidderminster. At least two of the band members (none of whose names could be confirmed) are said to have worked at the local college and other band members may have been students there. The musicians have a habit of playing under fictitious names, further complicating things and adding to the folklore.
According to various fan Web sites, the band’s first gig was performed at a tennis club in late 1997 and Priory of Brion finally began to make itself known in July 1999.
Plant reportedly the band’s name combines Priory of Zion (an ancient French secret society) and the Monty Python film “Life of Brian.”
The band sticks to mostly cover material but it has been known to break in to Led Zeppelin’s “Houses of the Holy” mid-song. The Priory of Brion set list has included songs by Van Morrison, Lou Reed, Jefferson Airplane, Bob Dylan, Jesse Colin Young, James Brown, and the delta blues artists who had such a huge influence on Led Zeppelin.
