Called by Minister Louis Farrakhan of the Nation of Islam, the event is intended to ensure “the spirit and the promise of the Million Man March lives on by seeking to develop and network the millions strong who participated [in the original march and subsequent activities],” according to a statement on the official Web site.

This time, men are encouraged to bring their wives and children to the rally – unlike the Million Man March – in order to bring the event’s message to families.

The hip-hop nation will play a large role in the Million Family March as well, with Russell Simmons and his wife, Kimora Lee, co-chairing an entertainment committee that includes Sean “Puffy” Combs, Whitney Houston, Bobby Brown, Will Smith, Jada Pinkett-Smith, Queen Latifah and Chris Tucker.

Committee members include DMX, Snoop Dogg, Ice Cube, Warren G, Eve, Dead Prez, Wu-Tang Clan, D’Angelo, Jay-Z, Isaac Hayes, Steve Harvey, Bernie Mac, D.L. Hughley, Cedric the Entertainer, and Jam Master Jay.

A number of entertainment industry powerhouses have thrown their support behind the Million Family March, including Magic Johnson and Spike Lee, as well as moguls from Black Entertainment Television, Radio One, Arista Records, Motown, Def Jam, Bad Boy Entertainment, Vibe magazine, Vanguarde Media and Fubu.

“I believe this march will have a dramatic effect on race relations,” Simmons said in a statement. “It’s a march about the human family, rising above color and religion, symbols and creed.”
