The settlement was announced July 28, and included the news that EMI had entered into a non-exclusive North American license with MP3.com for use of EMI-controlled recordings on My.MP3.com’s “Beam-It” and “Instant Listening” software services.

These services include giving consumers the ability to retrieve MP3 files of CDs they already own in a “personal locker,” among other things. However, My.MP3.com, accounts remain in “locked” status until settlements are reached between MP3.com and the two remaining record companies involved in the suit – Sony Corp. and Universal.

“EMI’s Internet strategy is to create innovative, convenient and attractive ways for fans to access their favorite artists’ music” said Jay Samit, an EMI VP. “This settlement ensures that copyright owners and creators are compensated fairly.”
