Hole drummer Samantha Maloney continues to fill in for Castillo, who underwent stomach surgery in June. He was supposed to join the tour in time to play his hometown of Albuquerque, N.M., July 8 but his doctors decided he needed more R&R.
Maloney will finish the first leg of the Crüe tour, which runs into September. Castillo is expected to be good to go when the band heads out again early next year.
Things are complicated for Anthrax as well. The speed-metal demons have been dropped from their opening slot on the Mötley Crüe tour and canceled all of their headlining dates.
Initially, no specific reason was given for Anthrax’s departure. The Crüe tour isn’t doing so well at the box office and it was thought that Anthrax may be looking for a better deal. The band’s headlining shows would have taken place on the Crüe tour’s off-nights, and maybe those six gigs didn’t make economic sense on their own.
Mötley Crüe later said in a statement that Anthrax was dropped “due to financial restraints.” Megadeth continues to open on the tour.
