Camp Zoe Converted To Park
The Camp Zoe site, for which Missouri Parks paid $640,000 for in an online auction, will reportedly feature hiking trails, floating and fishing.
Proceeds from the sale will not benefit former owner James Tebeau.
Tebeau, who has played in a Grateful Dead tribute band, was charged with one felony count of operating Camp Zoe for the facilitation of illegal drug use in June 2012.
He claims he did not sell or profit from drug sales on the property.
“I’m paying for the sins of others,” Tebeau told St. Louis’ Riverfront Times earlier this year. “Some people were ingesting some drugs at the property and selling drugs, which I wasn’t affiliated with in any way, shape or form…. We hired security to deal with issues like [drugs], but apparently they weren’t always doing their job.”
Tebeau did profit from concert attendance at the site, however.
The Times reported that nearly 150,000 people visited Camp Zoe for festivals during its six years in operation and suspicions arose at the Drug Enforcement Agency when Tebeau deposited $4.6 million into his bank account between 2004 and 2010.
During a four-year investigation, undercover officers allegedly made more than 150 purchases of illegal drugs during festivals at Camp Zoe.
