Mike Doughty Coughs Up A Tour
For Doughty the tour and accompanying album represent a chance to take a second look at the Soul Coughing catalog as he steps into the shoes of his 22-year-old former self “immersed in the house, hip-hop and anti-folk music” that influenced him as a young man in early ’90s Manhattan.
You’ll find the re-imagined Soul Coughing songs on his new album with an extremely long title. Named after a seemingly endless list of songs, Doughty has christened the disc Circles Super Bon Bon Sleepless How Many Cans? True Dreams Of Wichita Monster Man Mr. Bitterness Maybe I’ll Come Down St. Louise Is Listening I Miss The Girl Unmarked Helicopters The Idiot Kings So Far I have Not Found The Science.
Helmed by hip hop / dance producer Good Goose (Menya, Ninjasonik, Mac Lethal, Homeboy Sandman), the album dropping Sept. 17 by Doughty’s Snack Bar imprint also features the upright bass playing of Catherine Popper (Jack White, Willie Nelson).
The tour will mark the end of a seven-year period in which Doughty refused to perform Soul Coughing songs, choosing instead to focus on his seven solo albums. He’ll be backed on the autumn excursion by Popper and drummer Pete Wilhoit.
