Rolling Stones Doc Hits NY Film Fest

A restored version of The Rolling Stones’ 1966 rock documentary “Charlie Is My Darling” will get the big screen treatment at the New York Film Festival next month. The film has just been added to the festival’s Masterworks lineup.

Described in a press release from the Film Society of Lincoln Center as “the unseen story of the band before they became a legend,” the documentary was directed by Peter Whitehead and filmed during the band’s brief Ireland tour in 1965. The project came to be after Rolling Stones svengali Andrew Loog Oldham asked Whitehead to join the band on the excursion. The Guardian notes that the footage in the film includes the band’s first professional shot live performance.

The new version of “Charlie Is My Darling – Ireland 1965” features over 90,000 restored frames of optical screen prints and negative. The restoration team went back to the original sound tapes and 3-track live recordings, which include performances of “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction,” “The Last Time” and “Time Is On My Side.”

The world premier of the 65-minute restored film is set for Sept. 29 at New York City’s Walter Reade Theater, according to Rolling Stone magazine. An encore showing is scheduled Oct. 3. A DVD/Blue-ray is set for release Nov. 6.

Tickets for the New York Film Festival go on sale to the general public Sept. 9.
