Freddie Mercury Rising
Ever since a holographic Tupac graced the Coachella stage alongside a flesh-and-blood Snoop Dogg, people have been speculating about other deceased artists that might warrant a 3-D resurrection. Now it looks as if Queen’s legendary frontman might be next in line.
While talking with the BBC, May said Mercury would “appear” during a special performance of the Queen musical “We Will Rock You” celebrating the production’s 10th anniversary May 14.
But May didn’t say Mercury would come to life via a hologram, choosing instead to call Mercury’s promised appearance a new “effect” that he described as “an optical illusion of sorts.”
“People will come out saying, ‘did we actually see Freddie?’” May told the BBC.
May also said that he and his Queen cohorts had been looking at a technique for bringing Mercury back to the concert stage that was similar to what was used for Tupac’s Coachella experience, but that it might be too complex to incorporate into the musical.
“It’s a little unfortunate they did that thing with Tupac as we’ve been trying to make Freddie appear on the stage for quite a while,” May told the BBC.
“[That technique] is something we’ve looked at ourselves but I think probably for a show that runs eight shows a week, it’s not really quite practical.”
While we have the weekend to guess how Freddie Mercury will be resurrected. May did mention another special appearance slated for Monday night’s “We Will Rock You” London performance – Robert Di Niro, who is one the show’s producers. And word is he won’t be a hologram.
