MxPx Turns 20

MxPx is celebrating two decades of punk rock with four commemorative 20th anniversary shows.

Bassist/vocalist Mike Herrera, drummer Yuri Ruley and guitarist Andy Husted formed MxPx in Bremerton, Wash., in July 1992 when they were just 15 years old. The story goes that the band was originally called Magnified Plaid and became MxPx after the name was abbreviated to M.P. in order to fit on the show poster, but appeared as MxPx because Ruley’s handwriting used “X’s” instead of periods. Husted left the band in 1995 and was replaced by Tom Wisniewski.

Since releasing their debut studio effort, Pokinatcha, in 1993 on Tooth and Nail Records, MxPx has put out seven additional full-length albums, along with several EPs, compilation albums, cover albums, a Christmas album and a live album. The band’s ninth studio album, Plans Within Plans, is due out April 3 through MRI/Rock City Recording, marking MxPx’s first full-length release since 2007’s Secret Weapon.

The anniversary shows begin May 26 at Seattle’s El Corazon, featuring Amber Pacific and guests. Next on the schedule is two nights in Anaheim, Calif., at the House Of Blues June 29-30. Set Your Goals and Mest and Rufio support. MxPx will also play the main stage at JoshuaFest Aug. 31 in Plymouth, Calif., at the Amador County Fairgrounds.

A pre-sale for Seattle and Anaheim begins Thursday, March 29 through Live Nation. Tickets go on sale to the public Saturday, March 31.
