Gene Lynn Dies
Gene Lynn, a former nightclub owner and jazz singer, died of stomach cancer March 7 in St. Louis.
He was 78, according to the city’s Post-Dispatch.
Lynn, whose real name was Leon Campbell, operated several jazz clubs in the city that attracted artists such as Nancy Wilson, Joe Williams and Lou Rawls until the last one closed in 1986. He then opened Gene Lynn’s restaurant and club, the paper said.
The Alabama native’s performances included the Sheldon Concert Hall in 2013 as well as regular local gigs as recent as a few weeks ago. Lynn was inducted into the St. Louis Jazz Hall of Fame at Harris-Stowe State University, according to the Post-Dispatch.
