David Nail: That Boy Is On Fire
The tour shares its name with Nail’s third studio album, which was released in March via MCA Nashville. The LP includes the singles “Whatever She’s Got” and “Kiss You Tonight.”
All Music recommends giving the I’m A Fire multiple listens. All Music’s Stephen Thomas Erlewine writes, “It’s a grower, sounding better with repeated exposure, repeated listens revealing the craft in the songs and the subtlety in Nail’s execution.”
CountryWeekly.com praises Nail for the material on the album, noting, “Golden-voiced David Nail is one of those rare singers who sounds comfortable singing just about anything, so it’s to his credit that he deals in more hefty material on his third album.”
As for the “sad no more” reference in his Twitter bio, Nail talked to the Associated Press earlier this year turning around his reputation for singing emotional tunes.
“When we found the song, ‘Whatever She’s Got,’ it was kind of like the perfect storm, the perfect song to kind of set us in motion, so to speak,” Nail said. “I definitely got to a point personally, where I was just tired of being somewhat of a gloomy guy and I would hear people reference me as a moody.”
But Darius Rucker, who Nail has supported on the road, says that Nail is “still great at that sad song. You believe that he is feeling what he is singing. That’s a huge thing. That’s what makes your songs viable.”
